With close reference to one scene from "pan's labyrinth", explore how cinematography and mise-en-scene create meaning. The pale man sequence begins with the camera zooming out from Ofelia as she is entering the pale mans layer. This is followed by a cross-dissolve showing the corridor. The first shot uses a lot of low-key lighting whereas the second uses high-key lighting to show the transition from the real world where the Spanish civil war is happening  and franco is the dictator of Spain to the fantasy world. Del Toro has used a lot of red in the second shot to create a warm atmosphere  for the mis-en-scene. The camera continues to track backwards making Ofelia smaller and smaller. The Gunfighter The Gunfighter starts of with an enigma code straight away with a long shot showing a cowboy walking down the side of a saloon. The man we learn to know as the gunfighter has his hat down so we can't figure out who it is until this is revealed. This keeps the audience engaged as they are awaiting this information to be given to them. It doesn't reveal a lot about the film but the mis-en-scene sug gests its a western. I would want to incorporate this enigma code into my film sequence as it would allow me to create interest for one of my main characters in my story. The voice over is also used very well to create comedic affect as it doesn't fit the normal stereotype of a regular voice over. The fact that the actors break down the fourth wall and react and speak to the voice over is very funny as well. Discuss how important cinematography is in establishing strong responses from spectators to a key character in "La La Land". your answer must refer yo one scene in detail. The start of this sequence sees a mid shot zooming out to a long shot at a steady pace. This camera movement makes Seb the focus point of the shot and this helps me allign with the character. I see him as the cool guy who has a soft side to him and i can relate to that in a way as i see that in myself. At this point I was experiencing a preferred reading as  I enjoyed this time of the sequence as i really like the diegetic music with it as it is quite peaceful.This is supported by the spotlight shining on him as he is the only visible thing to the audience and this emphasises how important his character is to this story of love.
